OBSERVATORY SITE
Preparations At West Melton
The Canterbury Astronomical Society is at present negotiating for a site on which to build the Joyce Observatory. The site chosen is at West Melton, 15 miles from Christchurch. It is 475 feet above sea level. Good conditions for Mar observation have been found at West Melton, and the site should prove suitable for the society's astronomical work.
The observatory will house a 14-inch telescope already owned by the society, as well as other instruments.
A building fund has been opened with a sum of £l5OO from the estate of the late Mr A. F. Joyce, of Kaiapoi. The initial target for the building fund is £4OOO which, the society hopes to raise by public subscription.
Work will start on preparing the site in a few weeks, as soon as the land purchase is completed. Plans for the initial stage of the building are now being prepared.
Opportunist. When Norwich, Norfolk, Public Library announced an amnesty for overdue books one borrower brought back a vanload of 299. Some had been missing for 15 years.—London. December 10.
