EQUIPMENT FOR ARMY

* Engineering Squadron (N.Z. Press Association) WEIJJNOTON, Dec. 12. The Minister of Defence (Mr Eyre) announced today that authority has been given for the New Zealand Army to buy four pieces of heavy engineering equipment for the 6th Independent Field Squadron of the Royal New Zealand Engineers. The squadron is the engineer element of the regular field force and is responsible for the clearing, construction and maintenance of routes, water crossings and air strips, as well as much of the building done for the Army. Most of their equipment, with the exception of some wheeled tractors and bulldozers, has been in use since World War 11.

A heavy, six-wheel-drive construction grader will be bought for work on roads, air strips and other work for which the present grader is too light. Two five-ton mobile cranes will be used for lifting and carrying bridging equipment and for handling heavy assemblies in the mobile repair workshop. A crawler tractor for track, road, air strip and landing ground construction will be complementary to the wheeled tractors.
