NEWSPAPER MERGER?
Two Dailies In N.S.W. Town (N.Z. Press Assn, —Copyright) SYDNEY. Dec. 12. Two of the oldest country newspapers in New South Wales may merge to produce a new morning daily. They are the “Bathurst National Advocate,” established in 1889, and the “Western Times,” established in 1858, both morning dailies published in Bathurst in central western New South Wales. The boards of directors of the two companies have agreed on a merger subject to the approval of shareholders. It is proposed to call the new paper the “Western Advocate.”
A statement by the two papers today said increasing costs seemed to make a merger inevitable but the new daily would remain in local hands.
Bathurst is one of the few country centres in Australia with two morning dailies.
