RESEARCH ON ROADS
Board To Be Set Up (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Dec. 12. The establishment of a special unit to co-ordinate reading research will be proceeded with, independently of the Government’s intention to co-ordinate all research. When the matter was brought up at the meeting of the National Roads Board this afternoon, the chairman, the Minister of Works (Mr Goosman), suggested that it be held in abeyance because of the Government’s plans. ‘“Haven’t we gone a bit far to adopt that course?” asked Mr N. A. Rattray (counties). "Surely this must go on. The Road Research Board must be appointed and must begin its meetings.”’
After further discussion, Mr Goosman said he was prepared to concede the point. “I merely want to make sure that we are not getting across other proposals,” he said. Authority was given for the board to be set up. Its first meeting will be in March. A report before the Hoads Board said that the meeting was being delayed until the services of a permanent technical secretary were available.
So far, the following nominations have been made to the Road Research Board: Contractors, Mr D. F. Horlor (Nelson); counties, Messrs B. W. B. Cooper (Waimea County) and N. G. Hansen (Tauranga County); Minister of Works, Mr P. L. Laing and Dr. J. Robinson; municipalities, Mr J. S. Roberts (Wellington); Transport Department, Mr B. C. Campbell; universities, Professor H. J. Hopkins (Canterbury). The Director of Roading (Mr J. H. Macky) will be an ex-officio member.
Still Very Sick.—The 13-year-old Napier girl, Glenys Andrews, who was flown to Auckland Hospital on Saturday after she had contracted tetanus, was still in a serious condition yesterday.—(P.A.)
