RISE IN SHEEP NUMBERS
Canterbury Leads Other Areas New Zealand had more sheep and fewer sheep owners at June 30 this year than at the same time last year, a statement from the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker) says. Since June, 1961, the number of sheep has increased by 1.1 per cent, to 48.980,542, an increase of half a million. Canterbury has the largest number of sheep with 8,350,000. and Wellington is next with 7,900,000. The South Auckland-Bay of Plenty statistical area has 6,800,000; Southland 6,100.000; Otago 6,000,000, and Hawke’s Bay 5,900,000. At June 30, breeding ewes showed an increase of 350.000 to 33,950,015, or 1.1 per cent. The number of sheep owners decreased from 41,596 to 41.349. The North Island has about 4.000.000 more sheep than the South Island. 26.506.635, as against 22,473,907. In the South Island, Canterbury has about 2,000.000 more sheep than Otago or Southland, which come next after Canterbury's 8.351.163 with 6.005,987 and 6.088,859 respectively. Westland has the smallest number of sheep of any area in New Zealand, with only 167.770. Nelson is □ext lowest with 587,518.
