£50,000 GIFT
Art Gallery To Be Established (N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. Dec 12. A gift of securities valued at about £5OOOO has been made by a New Plymouth widow for the establishment of a public art gallery in the city. The gift was accepted at a special meeting of the New Plymouth City Council today. The woman is Mrs Monica Brewster, formerly Miss Govett, who has said that because of her connexion by blood and marriage with three families prominent in the early history of Taranaki, she has decided to commemorate in this way the names of the Govett, Atkinson, and Carrington families.
Mrs Brewster is the granddaughter of Archdeacon Henry Govett, a daughter of Mr Clement Govett, and a granddaughter of a former Premier of New Zealand. Sir Harry Atkinson. Her husband. the late Dr. Rex Carrington Brewster, was a grandson of Mr Octavious Carrington.
A provision at the trust deed setting out the gift is that the gallery be named the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth. The deed provides that the council set up a committee consisting of five or more persons under the Municipal Corporation Act within three months to promote the establishment of the gallery as soon as possible and to make recommendations for its control and administration. It also provides for an advisory committee comprising the directors of the Auckland City Art Gallery, the National Art Gallery, Wellington, the McDougall Art Gallery, Christchurch, and the public Art Gallery, Dunedin.
