WOOLSCOURING WORKERS
Wage Increases In New Award Increases of from 2d to 3d an hour- in minimum wage rates are granted to workers in the woolsoouring industry under the new Canterbury, Otago, and Southland woolscouring employees' award, issued by the Court of Arbitration. Ibe terms of the award were arrived at in Conciliation Council. The award is retrospective to October 29, but its wage rates do not incorporate the provisions of the last general wage order, on July 4. It is operative until April, 1964. Youths under 19 employed in woolsoouring works receive wage increases of from 6s to 8s a week, the new minimum rates ranging from £4 10s a week for a youth of 16 to £8 10s for a youth of 18 to 19.
The rates of pay for piecework are to be arranged between each employer and the union, the award says. Where shift workers are required to work any part of their shifts betw’een 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., they must now be paid an extra 5s a shift, instead of 4s 6d, as formerly. The footwear allowance where employees are working in greasy wool for the greater part of their time has been increased from £3 a year to £4.
Under a new provision in the award, the emeployers must where necessary, install dust-collectors, and ventilate workrooms “in such manner as to provide a sufficient supply of fresh air.'’
