COMPARISON OF DEFENCE
Indonesia And Australia (N.Z.PA--Reuter—Copi/ripht) CANBERRA. Dec 4. Indonesia has spent on defence twice as much of its national product as Australia has in the last five years The Miniater for Defence (Mr A. F. Townley) gave figures today showing that Indonesia has spent about 6 per cent, of ita national product on defence and Australia 3 per cent. Mr Townley’s figures show that Indonesia has many more men than Australia in all three armed services
Comparative figures for full-time servicemen are:— Navy: Australia 11,103, Indo-
nesia IS,OOO. Army: Australia 21,023, Indonesia 240,000; and Air Force: Australia 15 815,
Indonesia 15,000 to 20.000. Mr Townley was giving a written repiy in the House of Representatives to questions by Mr W. G. Hayden (Labour. Queensland). He also told Mr Hayden there were no establishments
in Australia carrying out research or activities connected with the development and propagetion ot germ and bacteria warfare.
