Christmas Carols

Sir, —The playing of Christmas carols at this time of the year to spread a message ot goodwill is in itself a wonderful thing; the playing of carols, however, to make a quick quid is greatly to be deplored. Last evening a lorry load of bandsmen were in Mansfield avenue about 8.30 and after but the briefest snatches of melody they moved quickly down the street. To an onlooker it appeared their progress was governed entirely by the speed with which each house was canvassed for a donation. —Yours etc., D. HABERFIELD. December 5, 1962.
