RADIOACTIVE FUELS
Difficulties In Shipping (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CANBERRA, November 29. The Australian Atomic Energy Commission disclosed yesterday it was having "considerable difficulty” in getting port authorities on the shipping route to Britain to agree to the entry of vessels carrying radio-active nuclear fuels. The commission said in its annual report it had been trying without success to arrange shipment of fuel residues from the nuclear reactor at Lucas Heights, near Sydney.
The residues had a valuable uranium content which could be recovered by reprocessing in Britain. The report said that unless arrangements could be made for shipment the accumulated stocks of irradiated fuel elements could ultimately embarrass the commission.
