N.Z. School Painting Cup Won By Nelson Girls

The New Zealand School Painting Cup has been won for the second time by Nelson Girls’ College, which was successful also in 1959, when the competition was instituted. Marsden School was the runner-up; and its group of five paintings was highly commended.

The subject of the competition this year was universality; and some 80 entries for the school and individual age-group prizes were received. The panel of judges under the chairmanship of Mr W. A. Sutton, of Christ-

church, expressed satisfaction with the standard of the painting and of the thought, expressiveness, and originality of the ideas expressed, the conditions of the competition requiring the judges to take all these factors into consideration. ■ The individual awards were: 10 years and under, Vicki Donaldson, Oraka Heights School; 11 years, Richard Peters, Oraka Heights School; 12 years, Peter Woods, Conway Flat School, and Richard Martin, Oraka Heights School, equal; 13 years, Lorraine Phillips, Nelson Girls’ College; 14 years, Vicky Edwards, St. Cuthbert’s College, Auckland; 15 years, Jane Evans, Nelson Giris’ College; 16 years, Diane Chamberlan, Nelson Girls’ College; 17 years and over, Patricia Watson, Marsden School, Wellington. The School Painting Cup, a beautifully carved totara cup in a Maori design, may be held permanently by Nel- » * Girls’ College unless arrangements can be made to continue the competition before next year. Miss Cora Wilding, of Kaikoura, the organiser in the four years of the competition so far, has reluctantly decided that she cannot carry on the work. She is hopeful that some national organisation interested in furthering the ideas of the competition will undertake to carry it on, possibly by some arrangement under which provincial branches would organise the competition in turn. The subjects chosen for the competition in the four years were democracy, cooperation, integrity, and universality. Miss Wilding said, in announcing the results of this year’s competition, that it had been very rewarding to find how well the children appreciated the importance of improving international fellowship and understanding in a period when everyone was living under the threat of atomic war.
