WEEK-LONG POLLING

Support For Experiment

(NZ. Press Association)

DUNEDIN, November 30. A preliminary analysis of the survey being conducted by the city council on the week-long polling at the last local body elections indicates that the experimental booth was, at best, only a partial success.

Questionaires were sent to the 4447 persons who voted in the special booth in the five days before the polling date and although many replies have not yet been received the answers of 2746 early voters have been analysed. For most people, it seems that the experimental booth was a convenience. But a large majority said they would have voted on polling day if the special booth had not been open.

However, 86.9 per cent, of the people who answered the questionaire said it was more convenient to vote on a weekday than on Saturday. Asked for general comments, 29.4 per cent, of the replies said the booth was a good idea, and hoped the week-long polling would be repeated. Comments made against week-long polling amounted to 8.7 per cent.
