HURRIED TRIP
No Time For Packing "The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, Nov. 25. The conductor of the National Orchestra, John Hopkins, returned to Auckland from a quick visit to Hawaii carrying the uniform of his profession—his tails—over his arm. “I usually pack them but this time the only thing I could do was carry them,” he said. The previous night he conducted the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra and with only minutes to spare after the concert caught a jet plane south to Nandi. The suit was still drenched after the exertions of a two-hour concert played in humidity equal to the Auckland ‘(proms” season. Mr Hopkins led the 80piece Honolulu orchestra in two concerts, one of them with the pianist. Ania Dorfman as soloist It was the first time the orchestra had played one of the works in the programme, the Sigelius Na 1 Symphony. Mr Hopkins relaxed at Whenuapai for an hour before catching a plane for Wellington. He left still clutching his slowly-drying tails.
