Mr J. H. Hall To Direct N.Z. Volunteer Service

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Nov. 26. The appointment of Mr J. H. Hall, directors of sound broadcasting. New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation, as executive officer of the Council for Volunteer Service Abroad was announced today by the chairman. Professor C. C. Aikman. Mr Hall will assume his position early next year after bis retirement from the corporation, but meantime will assist the council parttime. Professor Aikman said he had recently assumed office as chairman in place of Mr E. A. Woodfield, who had gone to London as Assistant Trade Commissioner. Professor Aikman said the council was already obtaining information from Governments in South-east Asia and the Pacific about the types of volunteers which would be moot usefid in their development plans. There bed been an encouraging response. It was expected that before Christmas, applications would be invited from New Zea-

landers willing to undertake volunteer service overseas. Young graduates were likely to be interested, but the council also proposed to place particular emphasis on the possibility of sending overseas New Zealanders with trade and technical skills. The council was anxious to draw volunteers from every walk of life. Professor Aikman emphasised that the scheme could only succeed if it reflected the interest of the New Zealand people as a whole in the needs of developing countries in the South-east Asia and Pacific areas. New Zealanders would be able to show their practical interest when the council launched its national appeal for financial support early in the New Year. The whole idea of the scheme was that the volunteers should be maintained in the field by direct contributions from the New Zealand public. These contributions would need to be kept up over a period.
