“KNITTING GIRL”
Home Offered In Gallery The “Knitting Girl,” the marble statuette which caused a controversy at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Society of Arts last week, may find a home in the Robert McDougall Art Gallery. The City Council last evening offered to house it. “I move that the council acquire the little knitting girl.” said Cr. A. Schumacher, chairman of the art gallery committee, but the Mayor (Mr G. Manning) said that was out of order, as there had been no discussion by the committee or the council, and it could not “acquire” it unless the society was willing. “Well, I move that we offer to house it,” Cr. Schumacher said. “I second that,” said the Deputy-Mayor (Cr. H. P. Smith). “Cr. Schumacher is afraid that it might be sold, or broken up or put in someone's garden. It was subscribed for by the public according to the newspapers, and if that is so the proper place for it is the art gallery.” “Hear, hear,” said Cr. R. H. Stillwell. “It is a real piece of miniature sculpture, far better than whait is being displayed in the gallery now.”
