Too Hot For Flies
(Special Correspondent N.Z.PJI.)
PERTH, Nov. 24.
Perth turned on a real scorcher for the first Saturday of the Empire Games. It was too hot even for the flies. By 6 am. the temperature was in the seventies, and at 10 am. had soared to 1005 degrees. People arriving early at the Games stadium for this afternoon’s athletics events sought shade under the trees in the parklands surrounding the arena. They wanted to stay out of the searing heat on the open seats as much as possible. The Games oarsmen had some breeze to refresh them, but spectators
along the banks of the
Canning river roasted in the fierce morning sun. By noon, the shade temperature was the highest in Perth this summer—lo 3 degrees. The November record is 104.6 degrees, set in 1913. Hie qualifying heats, which were to have been held this morning, were run yesterday and with so many people avoiding the heat, the Games stadium was practically empty an hour or so before the first events were due to begin. Ambulancemen were ready to deal with the many cases of heat exhaustion expected later in the day.
