Demonstration At Randwick
(N.Z. Press Assn,—Copyright) MELBOURNE. Nov. 25. For the second week in succession punters yesterday made an angry demonstration against New Statesman after the £3OOO Eclipse Stakes at Caulfield. Last week New Statesman led all the way to win the Sandown Cup, over one mile and a half. This was a complete reversal of his previous run, when he finished last in the Memorial Mile at Flemington. His trainer said later that his poor mile run was caused by a wet track. Yesterday he finished second last in the Eclipse Stakes, over one mile and a quarter. New Statesman was backed from 7/2 to start a hot favourite at 5/2. As the jockey. G. Lane, brought New Statesman back to scale punters yelled abuse at him The track was hard and fast yesterday, but it was probably the way the race was run that beat New Statesman. He went to the lead on settling down, but was tackled by On Guard, and at the mile these two held a clear break over the rest of the field. However, it was obvious at the home-turn that New Statesman was “gone,” while the fast pace suited the winner. Details'— ECLIPSE STAKES, £3000; IJm—DELVILLE (Boissier— Rudhaba) 7-6 M.
