Women’s Softball EASY WIN FOR MONOWAI
Kaiapoi Beaten, 12-3 The Canterbury Softball Association’s competitions continued on Saturday with ground conditions at the best this season at English Park, but the day was spoilt by a gusty wind. Monowai, with B. Makinson pitching well, was not extended to defeat Kaiapoi. Hagley, with a lead of II runs at the end of two innings, never looked in danger of being beaten by Christchurch. Results:—
Hagley 14, Christchurch 7. Monowai 12, Kaiapoi 3. Monowai v. Kaiapoi Kaiapoi batters were overwhelmed by the pitching at B. Makinaon in the first three innings, only two batters managed to get to first base safely, on errors. The first hit of the game for Kaiapoi was made by S. Hudson in the fourth innings with one batter out. However. Kaiapoi failed to open Its account when the following two batters failed to make first. B. Kitson, after getting to first base on an error and second base on a fielder's choice, opened her team's account on a three base hit by J. Kimber in the fifth, and J- Kimber scored on a hit by M. Hopkins before the side was retired. Kaiapoi scored another run in the sixth Innings when S. Hudson drove a ban to the outfield, stola to second, and scored on a two base hit by F. McIlwrlck. Kaiapoi showed glimpses at the form of which it is capable, but appears to lose concentration at vital stages. The Monowai fielders backed up the good pitching of B. Makinson, who struck out seven batters, did not concede a walk, and gave up five hits, and were guilty of only four errors throughout the game. After a slow start, scoring three runs in the first three innings. Monowai batters drove the ball hard to all parts of the diamond to score seven runs, one of which came from a home run by B. Makinson. Further strong batting in the fifth innings enabled the side to score two runs with the fielding quite good. Monowai failed in its sixth Innings and did not require its last bat to win 12-3. E. Law, L. Leask, C. Tennant, and B. Makinson batted strongly tor Monowai. Box score:—

Hudson allowed its only runners to first base. Stronger batting, including good hits by H. Johnson and J. Partridge, and erratic fielding labled the side to score fc rung. With two batters out in the fifth and bases loaded. J. Partridge drove the ball hard to the outfield to score K. McCormick, and with some good base running. H. Johnson. Christchurch failed in the next innings and after a promising start in its last bat H. Johnson scored on a hit by J. Phillips, but three catches retired the side without addition to the score. J. Partridge batted strongly for Christchurch. Hagley, batting strongly in its first two Innings, completely upset the Christchurch fielders to gain a commanding lead of 11 runs. Hagley only had one other scoring innings throughout the game. In the fourth innings, poor fielding allowing three runners to score. Hagley did not require its last bat to win easily, 14-7. L. Honeyman pitched steadily and only gave up five hits. L. Lydiat was responsible for a good pop fly catch, and also batted well, as did P. Bennet, J. Gaskell, and J. Timms. Box score
