SWIMMING Two Beat Records By Wide Margins
breaking was made to took particularly easy by Misses J. Reid (Erawood) and L. Blackett 'Spreydon) when the competitive swimming season in Canterbury began at the Wharenui Corona ..on pool on Saturday n-ght.
Taking part in the 220 yard events. Miss Blackett (breaststroke) swan 7sec faster then her own Canterbury junior record and Miss Reid • freestyle) recorded a time 6-ec better than her provincial under-13 record. The two girls, who are among Canterbury's brightest prospects for the future, completed a notable double for the evening by surpassing the records for 110 .yards in tneir respective strokes. The records were unofficial as they were recorded in mixed competition. But they served to emphasise the determination with which young Canterbury swimmers are approaching the several peak performances required of tnem this summer, starting with the South Island c.-.ampionships early next month. Easy Victory A number of other meritorious efforts helped make tne first mam carnival auspicious. A 15-year-old Wharenui club swimmer, Miss M. Jones caused a stir by outclassing a moderately good 220 yards breaststroke field to win by 16sec. Her opponents were half the length of the pool behind at the finish. I. H. McDonald (Spreydon), who was national men's 220 yards breaststroke champion six years ago, proved that he is by no
means a spent force by his able performances in each of three events. He won a four-length medley and a 229 yards breaststroke and tost narrowly to a rival of long standing, M. Hay (Elmwood), at 110 yards breaststroke. Several close finishes provided high points of excitement during the carnival. None drew greater applause, however, than the frenzied duel between M. Gould (St Albans' and D. Johnston >Fendalton) t over the last length of the 440 yards freestyle. Gould, the Canterbury junior champion and recordholder for the distance, made up nine seconds to dead-heat with Johnston.
The Wharenui pool, well lit and with a row of braziers radiating warmth to swimmers seeking refuge from the chill easterly, was a happy choice as venue of the first major carnival. The programme was conducted before a crowd which filled the pool's eastern stand. Results Abbreviations used in the results are: C..
