Flaming Way Was Surprise Winner

Flaming Way, which had been placed in one of his other eight starts this season, upset calculations when he beat Resistor and and Spinster Scott in a keen finish to the Greyhound Handicap, the main race for trotters. Flaming Way, a five-year-old gelding by Stormyway from Flame, is owned and trained at Ashburton by J. Wilson. Flaming Way was the 11-12 favourite and he paid £4B 2s for a win and £l2 5s 6d for a place.

Dianthus Girl, Control, With You, Robert Medoro, Indianna and Reprimand broke or lost ground in the first three furlongs, while Kennoway, Reprimand and Spark Gap broke approaching the two furlongs. Resistor set ail the pace, being trailed throughout by Flaming Way, with Spinster Scott next. These three led the field approaching the straight, with Mighty Hanover. Our Own, Moon Boy and When handiest of the others.

Resistor and Flaming Way were challenged by Spinster Scott inside the furlong, with Moon Boy making ground. In a keen finish Flaming Way did best to win by a nose from Resistor, with Spinster Scott only a neck away third, a short length in front of Moon Boy. When, which covered extra ground from the half-mile, was two lengths and a half back fifth, three lengths in front of Mighty Hanover, which shaded Our Own. Then there was a gap to Kennoway and Pohutukawa. Rough Start A straggling start to the Flying Handicap marred the event, which was won by the lightly-supported Guest Star. At the end of a furlong Dark Louise led from Gold Globe and Young Kim, with three lengths to Moose, three lengths to Guest Star, five lengths to Kyle View and Van Rush, and four lengths to Southern Cross. A slack pace resulted in the field bunching before the straight entrance where Dark Louise led from Gold Globe, Young Kim, Guest Star, Moose, Autumn Folly, Van Rush and Southern Cross. Dark Louise was soon beaten, Guest Star and Moose drawing out to be joined soon after by Great Credit. Guest Star fought on strongly to win by a neck from Moose, with half a head to Great Credit, which made up a lot of ground. Gold Globe was a length and a half back, fourth, shading Van Rush, with a length to Southern Cross, which was followed by Autumn Folly, Kyle View and Dark Louise. Fundamental was pulled up

and apart from the first five just after the start, the others lost ground in the first 100 yards. Easy Win Lakeda, which is owned and trained at Oamaru by J. W. Dalgety, gained an easy all-the-way win in the Harold Logan Handicap. She was closely attended In the middle Stages by Rothesay, but that runner was beaten before the half-mile.

M. Holme* sent Lakeda clear before the final quarter and she led to the straight by five lengths from Lady Charles, with Terako Queen, Hancove, Trade Talk, and Legendary following. Lakeda was not at top over the final furlong and she won convincingly by three lengths. Lady Charles paced a sound race for second, “a length in front of Terako Queen, which broke at the start, but did not lose much ground. Legendary made up ground for a close fourth, ahead of Robyn, Hancove, Aiblins, Inglemead, and Morsel Aiblins, Peel, Inglemead, Hiya, and Carver Doon gave ground at the start and Robyn and Legendary were checked. Consistent Oakleigh Lad brought his record for the season to two wins and five placing* from 10 starts when he was successful in the Dictation Handicap. Oakleigh Lad trailed the pacemaker. Medieval, until racing to the straight Medieval broke inside the last three furlongs and continued at a gallop. Oakleigh Lad was clear early in the run home and was not troubled to beat Medieval, which caught his gait on the post, by a length and a half. Our Jimmy, which galloped with one mile left was half a neck behind Medieval, with two lengths and a half to Doctor Kyle, two lengths to Tracey’s Pal, a neck to Minnow, and a short length to Kyran, which was well clear of the remainder. After an inquiry. Medieval was disqualified for galloping, and Our Jimmy, Doctor Kyle, and Tracey’s Pal were promoted. Local Princess, which was

restrained well back in the field until the straight by A. B. Ford, ran out a decisive winner in the Australasian Handicap, a race for probationary drivers. Local Princess finished in grand style and won by a length from My Share, with a short length to Zadios, a nose to Chief Omar, which lost a lot of ground early. Monapat made ground for fifth, ahead of Worthy River and Royal Attack. A smash, which put the favourite. Doctor Dan, Regal Duchess, Angkor, and Young Betty out of the contest, marred the Australasian Handicap. The race was run at a muddling pace, with Regal Duchess, Linda Stirling, Arriaga, Safe Return, and Bonnieburn having turns in front before No Comment took over at the six furlongs. The race was won by Cushie Doo, which paid £3l 8s for a win. She was well back early, but handy enough over the last mile. She ran on strongly to beat Loyal Brigade by a length and a half, with half a length to La Storm and No Comment, which dead-heated for third. Bonnieburn was right up fifth, ahead of Forest Grattan, Arriaga, Safe Return, and Leslie Grattan.
