U.N. Call For More Aid
(N JZ.P .A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, Nov. 24 The United Nations Social and Humanitarian Committee over-rode strong Communist Bloc objections yesterday and adopted a draft resolution urging U N member states to step up aid to Chinese refugees in Hong Kong. The draft, tabled by seven African and Latin-American countries, would have the General Assembly reaffirm its “concern” over the situation of the million refugees from the Communist mainlard in the Br lsh Crown Colony. It would convey the Assembly’s appreciation to U.N. member States, the Government of Hong Kong, non-gov-emment organisations and the U.N. High Commissioner for refugees for efforts undertaken so far. The High Commissioner (Dr. Felix Schnyder), of Switzerland, wouM be requested “to continue his good offices, in agreement with the Governments of the countries concerned, to provide assistance to the Chinese refugees in Bong Kong.” The committee adopted the resolution by 41 to 19, with 32 abstentions and 18 delegations absent. Australia and New Zealand voted for the resolution.
