GENERAL: Within the Division of Animal Health, investigations into parasitic diseases of sheep at the McMaster Laboratory, Sydney, and of cattle at the Veterinary Parasitology Laboratory, Brisbane, constitute a major part of the research programme. It is now intended to extend these activities to include the study of the epidemiology and control of parasitic diseases in the temperate climate typical of south-eastern Australia. The appointee will be expected to initiate and conduct investigations in the first instance, chiefly on cattle and sheep helminths. The Animal Health Research Laboratory, located at Parkville, an Inner suburb of Melbourne, is able to maintain a close liaison with appropriate neighbouring departments of the University of Melbourne. The major projects in the present research programme include studies on contagious bovine pleuro- pneumonia, virus diseases of livestock. Infectious causes of infertility in dairy herds and chemical pathology relating especially to hepatotoxlc alkaloids and to trace elements. There are already inter-relationships between virus infections of livestock and infection with helminths that require collaborative work with parasitologists. and this appointment will be the first to be made to this Laboratory in the field of parasitology. DUTIES: To initiate a study of helminth infection of cattle in southern Australia and to collaborate in relevant current studies on infectious diseases. QUALIFICATIONS: A University degree in veterinary science or its equivalent, with post-graduate research experience in relevent fields of work.
