CHRISTMAS EXHIBITION
Display Without Flowers Bright Christmas decorations glittered at the Hay’s Theatrette on Monday afternoon when Christchurch’s first full scale non-floral Christmas exhibition in add of charity was opened by the Mayoress (Mrs G. Manning). Held to raise funds for the
Christchurch Aged Peoples’ Welfare Council, the exhibition drew several dozen entries in the four competitive classes chosen for the occasion.
The exhibition, which will be open for two weeks, ■will include special demonstra-
tion displays of dry floral arrangement work by Mrs R. Elcock, a city floral artist. She was responsible for much of the exhibition’s organisation and for some of the competitive decorations. The judge for the competitive sections was Mr Cliff Bel worthy. Introduced by the managing director of Hay’s, Ltd. (Mr W. G. W. Rix), Mrs Manning congratulated the organisers and competitors o® their display and later presented the prizes. Also speaking briefly were Mesdames D. J. Wales and M. E. Lawrie (vice-president and secretary of the Aged People’s Welfare Council) deputising for the council’s chairman (Dr. H. R. Donald).
A special feature of the display was a huge stage arrangement prepared by Mrs Eleock on the theme of home and Christmas. Composed of a full-size white-painted cartwheel shaped in red velvet "potneetitias," and tall stalks of flax, ferns and dry grasses, this arrangement was completed with two towering red candles.
