N.Z. SHOULD BE PROMINENT IN GAMES ATHLETICS
'THREE New Zealanders, A M. G. Halberg (three miles), P. G. Snell (halfmile, mile), and Mrs V. I. Young (shot put, discus), are top of the list in performances by Empire Games athletes this season. These three appear to have the best chance of winning gold medals in their respective events, with Mrs Young an almost certainty for first place in both her events. Snell’s form has not been as impressive as it should have been at this stage, but his three-quarter mile time of 2min 58sec suggests that he will be at a peak by this week-end when the heats and finals of the half-mile will be run. Snell must expect stern opposition in the half-mile from the Jamaican, G. Kerr, who is said to be in very fine form.
Halberg has the best time in the three miles, his 13min 12.6 sec being almost three seconds and a half ahead of
the Englishman, M. B. S. Tulloh. who in turn, has recorded a second faster than the Canadian, B. Kidd Tulloh has been tipped us Halberg's likely rival for top honours, but the form of the 19-year-old Kidd in training should be a clear enough warning to both Halberg and Tulloh. Kidd has been running quarters of about 62sec in training and at the end he was hardly puffing. The table below gives the best performances this season in events in which New Zealanders are competing.
