Public Appeal For Picture

This id a photograph of the painting “Tomorrow Will Be The Same But Not As This Is,” by Colin McCahon.. The work represents a raver (or estuary mouth) under a steep, scrub-covered, New Zealand hillside. The dark beach in the foreground, the grey water, the steep hillside and the cloudy sky are four well-proportioned, horizontal bands in a vertical composition suggestive of peace and repose; but a black rod intruding diagonally from tiie top of the picture against the sky disturbs the •tranquility. A number of people, who were present at an exhibition of Mr McCahon’s works in 1959, decided to subscribe

for the purchase of the painting and present it to the city. They were Miss O. Spencer Bower. Mrs D. Holland, Mr and Mrs S. Hamblett, Messrs F. Gross, J. Summers, L. Bensemanin, R. N. O'Reilly and D. Langley. So far 30 persons, in addition to those mentioned above, have subscribed and a total of £47 14s 6d has been raised. The price of the painting is 65gns. When the idea was originated the choice was unanimous and lOgns was subscribed almost immediately. However, art gallery administration at the time was a little unsettled and the move came to a stop. After the recent Colin McCahon exhibition at the

Durham street Art Gallery tihe idea was revived a<nd an account has been opened at tihe Bank of New Zealand. Receipts are given by Mr J. Summers for all subscriptions and it is proposed to acknowledge them also in the newspaper. The director of the Robert McDougall Art Gallery (Mr W. S. Baverstock) has also been advised of the public appeal.
