WORK FOR WOMEN
Mrs W. Grant On Future
Although the National Council of Women has done a great deal in drawing women closer together, members have yet to discover their united strength, in the opinion of the retiring president of the council’s Christchurch branch IMrs W Grant).
Speaking at the last monthly meeting for the year. Mrs Grant challenged the belief that the council's work had now been done in the welfare state, where women’s rights had for the most part been won.
But today’s problems at local, national and international level were equally the concern of men and women, and tt was essential that women took their full responsibiltiy. “Too many of us still display apathy, a sense of inferiority and a willingness to let someone else do it,” she said. “We hear so often of women’s weaknesses their emotionalism, their dependence on intuition instead of knowledge and their lack of experience in affairs outside the home.’’ she said. “I found it most pleasing to read recently that certain general characteristics of women were counted as strengths, not weaknesses Their capacity for dedication is traditionally great From time immemorial women have had the willing hands and hearts to heal, to soothe, to help and the willingness to make sacrifices." said Mrs Grant. There was no doubt that today if women were to make a worthwhile contribution on all three levels, they must not only use their individual womanly abilities, but develop a wide knowledge of the many problems facing the world and become above all “humanity conscious” Mrs Grant is the newlyelected Dominion president of the council and will resume this office at the beginning of next year.
