Foxbridge Plate: Moy Wins By Neck
“The Press” Special Service
AUCKLAND. November 18. Moy, from Hastings, won a meritorious victory over Lampada, My Contact, and 10 other well - regarded middle-distance runners in the thirteenth Foxbridge Plate at Te Rapa yesterday.
Lampada tried very hard from the furlong, and she resisted his challenge determined ly. No doubt there have been better winners of the Foxbridge Plate, but not many have run more gamely. Moy was taken to the front quickly, after making the bend into the straight. A furlong from the finish Lampada began to overtake her. so that it seemed he might win. Moy then gave a little extra, and although just about spent at the finish, she won fairly decisively.
A five-year-old, by Someo from Princess Finis. Moy is prepared by K. Couper, who won the Royal Auckland Cup in 1953 with Coaltown. Two starts back she won the Harcourt Stakes at Trentham. This time last year she showed excellent form, and taken all round she has been a great money-spinner for her owner. Mr N M. Angus. Of the £22.859 bet on the Foxbridge Plate, Moy carried £5972. That made her the eachway favourite. On the win her return was £2 Bs, and she paid her place backers £1 10s 6d. Lampada was 2/2 and My Contact was 6/7.
Moy is the second mare to have won a Foxbridge Plate, the other being Bridie, to 1957. Five of her age—King Finchail. Mt. Denby, Takatu. Somerset Fair, and Lord Sasanof, had previously won the race.
After yesterday's running, Lord Sasanof's winning gallop of 2:3 remained the race record, Moy being required to go only 2:5 4-5. Gold Chick began quickest in the Foxbridge Plate, running clear over the first 100 yards. He was then joined by Marendellas. Heidi, Determined, and Old Parr drifted.
With a round to go and a furlong covered. Gold Chick and Marendellas were tof ’ether in front, half a ength from Dashing Star, which shaded Craddock (outside). Lampada came next. At the mile. Craddock challenged for the pacemaktog. At the seven he was in the clear by a length from Marendellas and Dashing Star, which were just about on terms. There was a further length to Lampada and Gold Chick and a couple to Moy A little further on Bemuse joined Craddock. For the next two furlongs they ran together at a brisk pace. Craddock then went clear again. Passing the half-mile, he was out by two lengths from Bemuse, which just led Marendellas. Lampada kept handy. Craddock went further ahead in the next furlong. Almost as soon as they came to the straight he began to shorten stride. Moy came to the front past Bemuse, with Lampada chasing her A furlong from the finish Lampada seemed likely to overtake Moy. but when urged along the Hastnigs mare came along the Hastings mare came clear again, and, although beginning to weaken, she won by a neck. Lampada was second by two lengths from My Conr tact.
There was a gap of two lengths to Bemuse (fourth). Determined, and Marwon. which were together ahead of Craddock, Dashing Star. Heidi, Old Parr. Gold Chick, Marendellas, and Kazaan. Results:—
