IDEAL CONDITIONS FOR COURTENAY SHOW AT KIRWEE

Hot sun from an almost cloudless sky marked the Courtenay Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual show, which was held at Kirwee on Saturday. The gate, at £2OB ss, was down about £3O on last year, but it was estimated about 2000 persons attended the show during the day. Entries generally were up slightly on last year, although in some of the horse sections entries fell slightly. Entries were described as poor in isolated sheep and cattle classes.

The weather remained fine all day, and during the morning and early part of the afternoon it was very hot, providing good business for soft drink and ice-cream stalls. It was not until the ring events were almost finished that a light wind sprang up. Sheep The sheep classes were mainly average both in quality and quantity, although there were some exceptions Entries in the Comedaie section were up on last year, but because it was so late in the season some of the woolly sheep were showing the effects of carrying their wool too long, said the judge (Mr W Dampier -Crossley). The champion ram. entered by F. C. Ridgen, was a fine, b g sheep carrying an even, heavy fleece, but it showed the effects of having its wool too long. The same fault was evident in the champion ewe.

Apart from the excess of wool the standard was generally good. A noticeable fault in both Border Leicester and English Leicester classes was overshot jaws, said the judge (Mr G. Beal). In the Border Leicester section, however, the quality was generally outstanding and the champion and reserve champ.on animals, entered by B. J. and R. M. Clinton and J. G. Gunn respectively, would hold their own at any show. The winning ram and ewe hoggets, both entered by D. S. Gunn, had beautiful carcases and good heads, but could have been better in the wool. Some of the better-woolled sheep in the same classes were not placed because they did not have the necessary standard of carcase.

The numbers in the Border Leicester section were good, but in the English Leicester section was very poor. ,

One of the worst features m the Southdown section was the number of animals carrying too much fat over the tail, said the judge (Mr J. H. Patterson). Both the top animals, however, were very good types of sheep. Many sheep were poor in colour. Numbers were good and competition was close in some classes. The standard. apart from the excess of fat over the tail, was generally good.

The Dorset section was small but very good, and the champion ram hogget was outstand-

:ng. said the judge (Mr L. J Begg). There were, however, only two entrants and as a result competition was weak Mr Begg said the Hampshire section was first-class. The numbers were good, each class being well contested, and competition was very strong. The top animals were excellent examples of their breed. The standard of the entries in the flock sheep section was very high indeed. said the judge (Mr C. C. Anderson). The numbers were good and were up on last year. The competition was strong in some of the classes, and the hoggets were exceptional.

There was an excellent showIng of fat lambs, especially as the works had been open for more than a month, said the judge (Mr M. D. Rvan) Unfortunately. some of the lambs were spoilt by big unsightly brands. The number of entries in the section was good and the competition was strong.

CATTLE Tlie Jersey judge (Mr R. Portis) said the general quality of the section was quite high, the champion cow entered by F Lange and Son showed plenty of length and had a good udder The reserve champion, a three-year-old entered bv D J Boal was also good. yearling heifer class was the strongest and the three top animals showed much promise The entries in the bull classes were very light but the champion. a yearling entered by D J. Boal. was of a high stancard.

Some of the two-year-old heifers showed deficiencies in udder formation and some of the older cows also had this fault. Entries in the Friesian section were very small, and he would have liked to have seen more, said the judge (Mr M. B. Leslie). The quality was fair and there was room for improvement. TTie champion cow was a three-year-old animal which should develop into a very useful cow. The -champion bull was of fair quality The competition in the bull classes was very poor. There was only one entrant tn the milking shorthorn class. Paparua Prison Farm, said the judge (Mr M. A. Peach). There was a marked improvement in quality since he had last judged at the show five years ago. The top animales in the Ayrshire section were very good but the entry w-as disappointing in number, said the judges (Messrs C. Chambers and M. J. Minehan). The standard of the animals was generally good, but competition was not particularly strong. The all breeds classes were judged by the cattle judges (Messrs M. A Peach, C, Chambers. M. J. Minehan R. A Stephens R. Portis, M B. Leslie and Miss J. Leslie). Mr Portis said entries were good and competition was strong. There were 14 entries in the Ml breeds yearling heifer class and this was particularly good. The top cows were entered by F. Lange and Son Mr Minehan said the Jerseys included some very nice animals. Horses There was a good entry to the led horses section, said the judge (Mrs C. L. Austin). There were some very good classes of led ponies and brood mares, and she felt some of the placed ponies would be seen doing well in riding classes.

In the harness horse section there was a very high stand-

ard, and the champion horse exhibited by J. S. and R. B. Lilley was well worthy of his win. said the judge (Mr A J. Agnew). This horse was brought out in a very competitive manner. The numbers in the section were fair and the competition was fairly close to some classes. Mr Agnew said of the cob classes that he was surprised at the high standard shown in some of the classes The champion cob. shown by Mr and Mrs L. L Bevin, and the reserve champion, were two outstanding types and could hold there own in any company. The judge of the heavier saddle ponies, pony jumps and riding classes (Mr W. R. Lemon) said he thought the top animals were of a very high standard and would compare with any to New Zealand. The general standard of the classes was high and the riding was also of a very good standard. Mr W. Fox. who judged the lighter riding classes and saddle ponies, said the standard of both riding and animals was high in this section also. The leading animals were very good and well brought out. Dog Trials The dog trials were really first-class and the entries were good, said the judge (Mr T. T. Ritchie). The standard of work was very good and the top dogs were outstanding. Entries in the grain and seed section were light and the standard of the entries was average. The judge (Mr H. G. Holmes) said that in some classes there was only one entry. Poultry Considering the time of the year the standard of the entries in the poultry section was good, said the judge (Mr A. N. Bell). Some of the classes were not very strong and entries were down on last year. The best male bird, a barred rock male exhibited by H. R. Warren, was a very good type of bird.
