Major Gordon Cooper, of the American Air Force, was the American Air Force, has been selected for the United States first day-long manned space shot. The attempt will be made in April. Major Cooper, aged 35. served as back-up pilot and technical adviser to Commander Walter Schirra for his six-orbit flight on October 3. Major Cooper will be the sixth American to be shot into space. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, which made the announcement, said that Commander Alan Shepard, America’s first man in space, would be Cooper’s back-up pilot
