TOWN HALL SITE
As soon as valuations of the Limes Hospital site were received, negotiations would be entered into with the Church Property Trustees to complete the purchase of the land, which is part of the site
recommended by Professor Gordon Stephenson for a town hall and civic centre, the City Council agreed last evening. The land, for which there were four certificates of title cmnprised an area of 3 roods 9.2 perches, the town hall committee reported. Shortly after Professor Stephensons report had been published, the Church Property Trustees had asked for a meeting to discuss the acquisition of the hospital site and adjacent land and the occupation of the property by a limited number of church organisations urgently in need of accommodation for a period not exceeding two years, the committee said. As a result of the discussions, Mr R. K. Baker had been engaged to make a valuation on behalf of the council.
The council agreed with the committee that it should be authorised to complete arrangements with the Church Property Trustees for a period not exceeding two year® It was refreshing to find an organisation coming to the council in a spirit of helpfulness, even though it was being somewhat inconvenienced by the decision on the site, commented the Mayor (Mr G. Manning).
