The Indian Defence Ministry disclosed yesterday that Indian forces had with-i drawn from the northern Ladakh post of Daulat Begoldi, which controls a vital mountain pass on the disrupted border. A Defence Ministry spokesman said he was not sure whether Chinese troops had occupied the post a key position with an airfield. Possession would give con* trol of the Karakoram Pass through the mighty Karakoram mountain range. The spokesman said the withdrawal took place a “few days ago” to enable Indian troops to take up “better defensive positions.” The Indian Prime Minister (Mr Nehru) replied yesterday to the latest letter from the Soviet Prime Minister (Mr Khrushchev). According to authoritative sources, Mr Khrushchev’s letter had reiterated the Soviet suggestion for a negotiated settlement It was believed Mr Nehru’s reply stood firmly by India’s decision not to talk with the Chinese until they withdrew to the positions held before hostilities.
