THE CARGON
XTIEING with the towveyor ’ for the title of “most ingenious time-saver of the year” at the new I.G.A. warehouse is She cargon. This device considerably cuts down the time which is used to load goods onto trucks for outwards despatch, and for inwards delivery. When a truck arrives at the warehouse, a lot of valuable time can be wasted in waiting for men to become available to unload. Then comes the first problem of the availability of both men and materials for loading the truck up again for its next outwards trip.
The cargon has solved both these problems. In brief, the cargon is a false tray for a truck. Warehousemen load the cargon at their leisure, and there is always a row of such loads facing onto the loading bay at the Side of the warehouse. When a truck comes in, the cargon on the back, containing incoming goods, is simply wheeled off. Then the truck moves into the next bay and a new cargon, full of outgoing goods, is wheeled onto the deck. The truck then moves away at once, leaving the warehousemen to unload the incoming cargon at their leisure. Time Cut
Full trucks now leave the company’s warehouse within minutes of arriving, with time for discharge of cargo and re-loading cut to almost nothing by the cargon.
It is appreciated that, until a truck is loaded, it is immobilised and is standing idle until the loading is completed. This could take as much as lj-2 hours to accomplish and, with two deliveries a day, the truck could
be standing idle for 3-4 hours, which means that only onehalf of the day could be used for delivering the goods.
In some cases, trucks have been able to load a 5-ton cargon and be away on the delivery within 3min.
