20m VEHICLES OVER BRIDGE
Seven Years Ahead Of Estimate
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 7. The 20-miUitoin.th vehicle to cross the Auckland Harbour Bridge since its opening in May, 1959, reached the toll plaza at 11.30 am. today—seven years ahead of the original estimate. The vehicle was a Railway Road Services bus, carrying 17 American travel agents on a sightseeing tour of the North Shore.
The driver, Mr D. V. Whitchurch, aged 25 was presented with an inscribed silver tray by the deputy-chair-man of the Auckland Harbour Bridge Authority (Mr B. Stevenson).
"The fact that 20 million vehicles have crossed the bridge in about one-third of the time that the experts estimated highlights the necessity to start planning for a second harbour bridge crossing,” said Mr Stevenson. "The traffic on the bridge will reach saturation point much sooner than expected.”
