Magistrate’s Court Licence Suspended Until Day Before Wedding

A request by a young man that hie driver’s licence not be cancelled because he is to be married on February 2, was partly granted by Mr A. P. Blair, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Gary Robert Brown, aged 21, a tailor, was fined £l2 and his driver’s licence suspended until February 1 for exceeding 30 miles an hour in Opawa road on July .10. Brown pleaded guilty to the charge. Chief Patrol Officer J. Brown said the defendant had previous convictions for speeding and his licence was in jeopardy. In 1958 he had been fined £lO for dangerous driving and failing to stop after an accident. On that occasion his' \ licence had been cancelled for six months In 1959 he was fined £6 for speeding and for failing to keep left, and earlier this year he was fined £7 for speeding, said Mr Brown. ADMITTED CHARGES Charged with unlawfully taking a car valued at £350 on November 5, and driving in Cathedral square while tinder the influence of drink or drugs cm the same date, Edward Brand, aged 31, a driver, was convicted and remanded in custody to November 12 for sentence. Brand pleaded guilty to both charges. 1 At 6.55 p.m. a man reported his car had been taken from Worcester street shortly before, said DetectiveSergeant A. W. R. Ball. Later that same evening two constables noticed a car being driven erratically in Cathedral square. It was speeding up then slowing down, then it suddenly pulled into the parking area at the Post Office. When the accused got out he was found to be finsteady on his feet and his breath smelt of liquor. At the police station he was certified by a doctor as unfit to drive. INDECENT ASSAULT Pleading guilty to a charge of indecently assaulting an 11-year-old girl on November 3, Lachlana MacDonald, aged 38. a watchman, was convicted and remanded in custody until November 13 for sentence.
