BUILDING RAZED
Suspected Arson (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 5. An unoccupied Army barracks on Palmer Head was razed tonight by fire—one of more than a dozen blazes fought by Wellington firemen. Investigators suspect the fire may have been deliberately started. The Wellington Chief Fire Officer, Mr W. J. Henderson, spotted the blaze from his patrol car while in the Lyall Bay area. He radioed his station for action as hundreds of spectators watched the wooden building burning to a skeleton on the 400 foot hill above Rongotai Airport. From 8 p.m. until shortly before midnight the brigade had 19 calls, including 13 to gorse fires and two to property blazes. Fireworks thrown in the doorway of John Dickinson’s factory at Kilbirnie started a small fire. About a dozen persons were treated for burns at ■the Wellington Hospital during the evening. One boy was admitted with burned eyes after a cracker exploded in his hand, but his injuries were reported as not serious. Fire in a post box at the Taita Post Office badly damaged it and burned some mail. Police are investigating this fire, believed to have been deliberately lit.
