Coffin Timber The Otago and Southland Timber Merchants’ Association will discuss with the Otago - Southland Funeral Directors’ Association the question of supply of coffin timber. At the New Zealand Timber Merchants’. Federation's annual conference at Queenstown yesterday, a telegram was read from the Funeral Directors’ Association expressing concern at the difficulty in obtaining supplies of 13in and 14in width timber. The conference agreed that the local associations should take up the matter.
1 Christmas Gift I A North Canterbury cattle ; breeder, whose entries aver- ■ aged well at the South Island Aberdeen Angus show and sale of bulls at Addington on Monday, celebrated his success by making a handsome donation to the Children’s Occupation Centre in Merivale lane for the Christmas gift fund.' Fitness Campaign The Transport Department is at present conducting a driver-vehicle fitness campaign, which is to last until November 30. It is designed to provide a check on vehicle warrants and driver’s licences. During the next few weeks, officers of the department will stop vehicles at random to check these items. Flag For Chapel At Burnham camp tomorrow the original flag of the 2nd Battalion, New Zealand Regiment, will be laid up in the camp chapel for safe keeping. The flag will remain there to honour the memory of those battalion members who died on active service in Malaya. The brief ceremonial will begin with the dislodging of the regimental colour. This, together w’ith the Queen’s Colour, was presented to the battalion earlier this . ear. At the conclusion of the ceremony the battalion will return to duty.
Hospital Tenders Three tenders have been let by the North Canterbury Hospital Board for work at the Princess Margaret Hospital Tennis courts are to be laid down by Road Carpet Contracts, Ltd., for £2132, hillside drainage is to be carried out by Hayman and Mitchell for £873, and plant room ventilation is to be provided by Vale and Company. Ltd., for £3540. Whitebait Cheaper A greater quantity of whitebait than was available earlier in the week was offered in city fish shops yesterday. Improved weather and fishing conditions both locally and on the West Coast have increased supplies, prices dropping 6d a quarter pound to 3s 9d. Other fish was in only average supply, tarakihi at 4s a pound and gurnard at 2s 3d, being the most popular lines. >
