Wool Opens At Lower Levels

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, October 17. Prices for crossbred wools were 2f per cent to 5 per cent down on last year’s opening prices when the 1962-453 wool-selling season opened today in Dunedin. Fine wools were about on a par. The official report on the sale, issued by the New Zealand Wool Commission, says that prices were slightly in sellers’ favour, compared with the recent August sales. Few lots were pas&ed and the commission was not called on to bid the floor price. A catalogue of 27,367 bales was offered today and the remainder—27,ll6 bales—will be offered on Friday.

A good selection of high standard wool was offered at the sale, the report says. “Each year sees more prelamb shorn wool at the October sale which speaks for the growing popularity of this practice, even among the high country graziers who offered some choice Merino and fine halfbred clips. “The clip generally is of good style, well grown and of good length, but early shorn hogget wools lack the length necessary to command the highest competition. It was evident from the opening of the catalogue that buyers were keenly interested in well-prepared wools of even length and quality. “If farmers would realise the importance of this factor they would be rewarded with the higher returns that attractively prepared clips obtain.” Competition was well spread. Although the Continent dominated the market, Bradford was interested mainly in good length spinners’ wool. The American demand was mainly for the coarser types of wools suitable for the carpet trade. The local mills were operating keenly in the Merino and fine halfbred section. Rant* of Prices The official range of prices was as fallows:— d. d.

“It is my private opinion that it is easier in some'ways to be a mother than a father because a woman can always be doing something with her hands in moments when she is required to act like a parent, and this somehow lends a spurious authority to even the most addle-pated decisions . . .’’—Bentz Plagemann.
