Y.F.C. ACTIVITIES

Members oJ* Yeung Farmers' Clubs in North Canterbury have contributed to the success of the show in recent years by organising the popular shearing and wool handling demonstrations and safety displays. While the main aim of the Y.F.C. activities is to develop better farmers for the future, the organisation promotes many educational projects of a wider nature. The high standard a. tained by members in the district is shown by their success in Canterbury council and national Y.FjC. competitions and selections for overseas exchanges.

Competitions taking place at dub and higher levels encourage the development of greater skills at such practical farming operations as ploughing, dog work, shepherding, and gaining a knowledge of the finer points of stock.

Field days are devoted to the study of leading farms, and such specialised aspects as farm forestry, and farm safety.

To encourage a better appreciation of the finer pointe of the type of lamb required for the export market, the district committee, with the co-operation of one of the freezing companies, introduced an export lamb competition this year. After judging the lambs on-the-hoof at the works, the

By the competition it is hoped that young farmers will learn to relate on-the-hoof judging to the carcase qualities desired for export. Lt has been suggested the competition be broadened to include beef cattle and pigs.

Last year the district representatives won the teams’ event at the Y.F.C. national stock-judging contest and they repated the success this year, and also won the cup
