TRAVEL DURING HOLIDAYS

Lighter Movement Expected

Bookings for air, sea, and rail transport suggest that not quite as many persons will leave Christchurch this Labour Day week-end as left last year. The National Airways Corporation will run 19 special flights from Christchurch during the holiday period in addition to its scheduled services. Although there were indications that most flights would be full there was nothing yesterday to suggest record numbers.

Sailings of the Inter-island steamer Hinemoa tomorrow and on Monday are heavily booked. But persons are still getting accommodation through late cancellations. The same seems to apply to the Maori, travelling from Wellington on the same days. Bookings for journey* from Christchurch by rail are believed to be slightly fewer than last year’s- Tomorrow and on Saturday almost 1000 persons will travel to Dunedin, 250 to Blenheim or Picton, and 950 (larger than usual) to the West Coast.

The New Zealand Railways Road Services expect the four days to produce an “average busy week-end." Most roads are expected to carry heavy traffic from Christchurch. The Transport Department will have 35 officers and vehictea patrolling the roads. Ths department’s chief traffic officer (Mr E. Wilson) said yesterday that more traffic was expected to use the roads north of the city than those to the south. Thi* was mainly because of holiday activities at Rangfora. Tomorrow there will be a racing meeting, on Saturday an agriouttural and pastoral show, on Sunday an air pageant, and on Labour Day racing again. Mr Wilson appealed to motorists to keep a reasonable speed over the Waimakariri river and so avoid bumper-to bumper procession*. Cyclists he asked to travel in single file to allow easier overtaking.
