WOOL-CLASSER SENTENCED
Attempt To Use Instrument (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct 17. A sentence of 12 months’ imprisonment was imposed by Mr Justice Hutchison in the Supreme Court at Wellington today on John Armand Borlase, a 58-year-old wool classer, when he appeared for sentence on a charge of attempting unlawfully to use an instrument with intent to procure a miscarriage. On behalf of Borlase, Mr G. I. Joseph said that according to the probation officer’s report the prisoner had everything in his favour as a man. He was a hard worker and had the ability to lead and bring out the best in the men under him. As a husband, father and provider there was no complaint about him. His popularity and desire to help people was perhaps the origin of the offence. His Honour said Borlase had no previous convictions and was not in financial stress. He had been well aware of the calculated risk he was taking and why he took it was quite unexplained. It was. nevertheless, a serious offence and could be met only by a gaol sentence.
