WARNING TO STEWARDS
Fined After Port Disturbance
A warning that any repitition of their behaviour would bring gaol sentences was given to six stewards of the liner Rangitoto who appeared before Mr L. J. Shuker and Captain A, R. Champion Justices of the Peace, in the Magistrate’s Court, Lyttelton, on Saturday. Senior-Sergeant D. C. Simpson said about a dozen men were seen acting in a disorderly manner in Oxford street about 4 p.m. on Friday and were told to go back to their ship by Constable G. A. Chapman. The men refused and entered a milk bar and then went to the Albion Hotel where they made a nuisance of themselves by using obscene language. Constable Chapman summoned aid and after a scuffle six men were arrested.
The police considered the men came ashore looking for trouble and produced in Court sawn portions of broom handles which the men had dropped. On charges of disorderly behaviour, Kenneth Bernard Margetits, aged 18, Allan James Mclntosh, aged 20, Brian John Hall, aged 2L, Robert Valentine Sheared aged 20, and Douglas Arthur Southgate, aged 19, were fined £7 10s. Southgate was also fined £1 10s on a charge of drunkenness. Colin John livings, aged 19, was fined £.l 10s on a charge of drunkenness.
