Norton Francis Cup

Nineteen Canterbury country clubs in teams of four played a greensome stroke competition at Shirley yesterday for the Norton Francis Cup.

The course was in first-class order and the slightly holding but true greens were appreciated by the players. Results:—

Norton Francis Cup winners: Rangiora (J. Lawson, B. Leech, H. Fowler, B. Helm) 144, after a play-off with Greendale (J. Blamires, R. Ridgen, F. Cridge. G. Shipley), 144. Shirley Markers’ Cup winners: H. R. E. Stevens. A. R Mehalski F. A. MaUey and R. C. Saunders, 131.

This was a record for the event, the score of Taylor. Brown. Jarrett and Wood (132) made In 1947 being bettered. Other country results:— 148, Kaiapoi. Gleniti. PHILLIPS WINS N.S.W. TITLE (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY. Oct. 14. A superb display of putting over the last 18 holes gave F. Phillips a two-stroke victory in the New South Wales open golf championship at Manly yesterday. Phillips shot a last round 68, to total 278 for the 72 holes—lo under par.

He won from E. Ball (280) and W. Dunk (281). K. Nagle finished equal sixth.
