Quick Time Too Good For Rivals At Orari
Quick Time galloped with the zest generally expected from a horse half his age to win the Claude Stock Memorial Handicap at Orari on Saturday.
Mr B. F. Mears’ 11-year-old Defaulter gelding battled the last furlong with his stablemate, Kastanea, and his dogged finish gave him victory by a head.
It was practically a re-run of the race a year ago when Quick Time battled with Personify and won by half a head. Personify was one of the principals in the finish again on Saturday, but this time he was third, half a length behind Kastanea.
Quick Time's victory marked the successful return to race-nding of the stable apprentice B D. Collins, who only received his clearance to resume race-riding last Tuesday after being off the scene with a fractured ankle since lasi July. Saturday’s performance satisfied Quick Time’s connexions that he is making pleasing progress in his preparation for the New Zealand Cup next month. It will be his third attempt for honours in the Riccarton two-miler, a race in which he had been a minor place-getter in the last two years
Quick Time and Kastanea are both trained at Riccarton by J. L. Barr who was also represented successfuly at the meeting by Wellington, the Arundel Intermediate Handicap winner.
The Claude Stock Memorial was the principal event and first leg of the double at the Geraldine Racing Club’s second spring meeting. Quick Time was the 4'6 favourite of 16 and paid £lO Is 6d and £3 18s for a win-and-place. In a total double pool of £ 16,907 he carried 1394 J 10s tickets. The popular fancies were Personify and Kastanea with 6521 and 5591$ tickets respectively. The second leg, the Stewards’ Handicap, resulted in an all-the-way win for Vitamise, a six-year-old King’s Command gelding trained at Riccarton for Mr and Mrs P. P Hudson by J E Shaw
Although having his first race since March, Vitamise was the 1/2 favourite as the result of an outstanding gallop in training on Thursday. The double dividend for Quirk Time-Vitam'se was £lB4 9s for £1 This was shared by the holders of 303 5s tickets, 73 of which were on the course.
The meeting was held in fine but overcast weather and the track was firm and fast. On - course investments amounted to £20,069. including £2006 'Os on the double, compared with £19.794 10s last year. B D Collins brought Quick Time forward quickly from one of the outside barrier positions and he was three
wide alongside Derailment ana My Fair Lady in the third line after a furlong and a half. Believe Me quickly pulled his way to the front and left the straight just ahead of Safe Harbour (being eased back! and Matauwhi. Just at this point Derailment struck bother and his rider, W. Traecey, was bumped to the ground. Believe Me held a clear lead till the half-mile, but soon after Matauwhi joined him in front and a little closer to home Kastanea improved a couple of places to make it a line of three. My Fair Lady was in the trailing position then on the inner of Safe Harbour and Quick Time made it a line of three with them. Personify was next on the inner and Sailorman was trying to make ground wider out.
Believe Me and Matauwhi were done with early in the run home and Kastanea held a slender lead from Quick Time starting the last furlong.
Quick Time gradually inched up to his stablemate and worked ahead a few strides from the end.
Personify ran the race out well for third three parts of a length back. He ot’t-finished Sa’lorman by a neck. There was a length then to Matauwhi, which was followed in by Safe Harbour, Believe Me. Gay Defoe. My
Fait Lady, Persuasive, White Skies, Alloa, Corrionzo. Rhythm Rein and Supreme Effort Vitamise Too Smart Vitamise started his six-year-old facing by giving his sprint rivals a galloping lesson in the Stewards’ Handicap, second leg of the double Vitamise, -which was the 1/2 favourite, had little difficulty in justifying the support. He ran into a clear lead at the end of a furlong and kept beyond challenging distance till the finish. Newbrook, Tutton. Neron and Francisco chased Vitamise round to the straight and Tutton did best of these in the run home. He outfinished Newbrook for second by half a length but was three lengths behind Vitamise.
French Tray, which had to be checked on the heels of other runners twice during the race, was running on for fourth a length and a half back. He beat Hopeful, also
running on, by a head, then there was a length and a half to Fair King which was followed in by Picright,
Neron, Picket, Summer Star, Francisco, Payout and Tocsin. Tarlon, which shared the second line with Newbrook till the half-mile, bled badly and was pulled up on the home turn.
