Long Trip To See Rondabelle Win
The Dunedin owner, Mr E. C. S. Falconer, made a rush trip from Hong Kong to New Zealand to see his filly Rondabelle win the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham on Saturday.
Mr Falconer was away on a world tour when Rondabelle won the Dunedin Jockey Club’s McLean Stakes last month, but broke it last week and arrived in Wellington on Friday.
Rondabelle gave some highly-rated youngsters a sound beating. She started 15 wide, but dashed to the front when the race was about half over and won by a length and a half from the favourite, Gold Chat.
Gold Chat, backed as if unbeatable, beat the others even more easily. La Golondrina, from Wanganui caught Fontura in the last few strides to take third place. Rondabelle. one of the first crop of the English-bred Bellborough, which is at stud in Southland, is trained at Wingatui by R. Heasley and was ridden by last season's leading jockey, R. J. Skelton. Heasley, one of New Zealand's top jumping riders some years back, has trained some useful horses, but Rondabelle is his best ever.
Rondabelle was brought south on Saturday night, and her next race will be the Welcome Stakes at Riccarton. She will now be a dominaiting favourite for the Riccarton classic.
She is the first from the South Island to win the Wellesley Stakes since 1953 when the Southland owned and trained Mijiji narrowly beat the Riccarton filly. Hush Money.
She gave R. J. Skelton his first win in the race.
Hennaion, ridden by W. D. Skelton, led the Wellesley Stakes field over the first furlong or so, but Rondabelle came to the front just before they joined the course proper.
She led Gold Chat by two lengths starting the last furlong, and the race was then as good as over. The camera could not separate Fountainheads halfbrother Fontura, and Burgos’s brother. Kebir, for fourth: and the weakening Hermaion was next. Resonare, the second favourite, finished eighth.
