Tobacco Firms React To Ban "The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND. October 12. The four New Zealand tobacco companies—W. D. and H. O. Wills. Rothmans. Godfrey Phillips and the St. James’ Tobacco Companyhave withdrawn from radio and television advertising contracts.
Representatives of two of the companies said in Auckland that the decision had been made for two reasons—an increase in advertising rates imposed by the Broadcasting Corporation and the imposition of restrictions on cigarette and tobacco advertising.
The withdrawal from the contracts took place from October 1. It is understood that the decision to withdraw was made only a few days before this.
Tobacco companies paid the corporation about £lOO.OOO a year for advertising.
The corporation earlier announced that from October 1 cigarette and tobacco advertisements would appear on television only after 7.30 p.m From April 1 next year, advertisements must not encourage young people to smoke nor may they use popular sporting figures or heroes.
