McMURDO FIRE

Nuclear Power Plant Damaged (N.ZP.A .-Reuter—Copyright)

WASHINGTON, October 12. Fire broke out in the nuclear power plant at the United States Antarctic support base at McMurdo Sound last Sunday, causing minor damage, but no release of radiation, the Atomic Energy Commission announced today.

The A.E.C. said nobody was injured in the blaze and that the plant probably would be ready for operation in about a week.

The cause of the fire, which scorched electric cables and pipe insulation as well as damaging protective cans for control rod instrumentation in the reactor tank, is being investigated.
