Newbrook Has Chance In Orari Second Leg

The prospect of a Riccarton victory in the Stewards’ Handicap, second leg of the double at Orari today, strengthened yesterday when the Washdyke mare, Double, dropped out of the field.

Newbrook, one of Riccarton’s most promising two-year-olds last season, might now be the popular fancy.

Newbrook is the youngest of 14 runners in the field, but he could still prove a formidable opponent for his older rivals. One of the light-weights, he carries the colours of his Riccarton trainer, J. S. Shaw. Other locally- trained lightweights with sound sprint form on their records include Picket and Francisco. There will probably be solid backing also for Hopeful and Payout, stablemates in G. H. Murfitt’s team.

Vitamise. which sprinted attractively in training on Thursday, is another capable of getting six furlongs successfully “first-up.” Luck in the running will probably play a major role in the finish of the first leg. the Claude Stock Memorial, in which 18 starters will battle for honours on the small, turning track. Personify and Kastanea have strong form credentials for this race, but Sailorman. having his second race after a spell, might be capable of extending them both. Forsythe and Golden Howe were both scratched for the Claude Stock Memorial yesterday.

Ballots were necessary in the Peel Forest and Winchester Stakes and the Gladstone Improvers’ Handicap. Coming regained entry to the Peel Forest Stakes because of the scratching of Tracey’s Comet, but Winkler. Scuffle, Moorooka, Lellan, and Renteina were automatically scratched at noon yesterday. Apparel failed to gain reentry to the Winchester Stakes, and Sigurd, Polly Alonzo, Luv and Ducks. Cantelo and Gabbler were kept out of the Gladstone Improvers’ Handicap. French Leave and Count Pedro have dropped out of the Temuka Stakes, leaving only eight runners in the field.

Calvados and Purr Along are the defections from the Wainui Improvers’ Highweight. and Underbid has

dropped out of the Arundel Intermediate Handicap.

Some good gallops and fast times are likely on a track which, according to the club's secretary, Mr L. R. Oliff, is in excellent order.
