Physical Training At University

Sir, —The remarks of Mr Gilkison. Commissioner of Works, at the annual dinner of the Rolleeton House students’ hostel make interesting read. I would agree that the planning of expensive university buildings without the necessary hostel facilities is a matter of great concern. Mr Gilkison is concerned lest our universities become “swot shops.” The lack of other facilities as well reduces our universities to this level Just as important are adequate physical training facilities. The need for these is recognised in our schools, yet is neglected when our sons and daughters moved to the university. The number of students at the Engineering School alone would, on the standards set by the Education Department, warrant a substantia! gymnasium. But it has no such facilities, and what provision has been made for the several thousand students soon to be congregated at Ilam?— Yours, etc., SLIPPED DISCUS. October 12, 1962
