NANSEN MEDAL FOR 1962
Australian Wins U.N. Award
The Nansen Medal for 1962 has been awarded to Sir Tasman Heyes, secretary of the Australian Commonwealth Department of Immigration since its formation in 1946 until his retirement from office in November. 1961. The award was made in recognition of the major contribution which he, and the Australian Government and people, have made and are making to the solution of refugee problems. Mr F. Schnyder, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, who announced the award, said it was a tribute not only to an able and far-sighted friend of refugees, but also to the generosity of his countrymen- Sir Tasman Heyes had directed programmes under which more than 270.000 refugees had entered Australia in the post-war period. The Nansen Medal, named after Fridtjof Nansen, statesman, humanitarian, and first League of Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, is awarded each year for outstanding services in the field of international work for refugees.
