Retirement Of Mr R. A. Wilson

More than 30 years of service with Woolworths tNew Zealand), Ltd. in Christchurch was recognised at a buffet dinner given in honour of Mr R. A. Wilson. For more than 25 years Mr Wilson was associated with the gardening department of the company, and as a buyer

for the last 10 years he became well known to growers throughout the South Island. Mr Wilson joined the company in 1930 and was a member of the original staff of the High street branch two weeks before it opened. He was first employed In the hardware and electrical department and later transferred to the gardening department, where he remained for the rest of his service.

Looking back to those days, Mr Wilson said he was no gardener then. “When I started I did not know much about it. but I picked it up as I Went along.” He said that much of what he had learned came from the suppliers of stock, and he studied their methods of growing. The managing director in New Zealand (Mr J. M. Laurenson) presented Mr Wilson with a cheque on behalf of the company. Farewell gifts of an electric blanket and electric heater were presented by the Dunedin manager (Mr L. Spivey) on behalf of Mr Wilson’s friends in the company.
